Together, we’re a mother-daughter duo who believe learning is everywhere.
In books, in nature, in mistakes, in midnight kitchen chats. We’ve laughed a lot, cried a little, and discovered that freedom doesn’t mean chaos; it means curiosity leading the way.
Pull up a chair. Let’s talk about how your family can learn in freedom too.
OUR STORY
WHEN LEARNING WAS PLAY
Before school entered our lives, learning in our home looked a lot like laughter, muddy hands, and endless “why” questions. Esila grew up in a world where curiosity was our compass and creativity was never confined to paper. I knew school might dim some of that magic; I just didn’t realize how much.
When she started preschool, the shift was subtle at first. But soon, learning became a duty. A checklist. Something to “finish” rather than enjoy. The sparkle in her eyes faded, and my heart broke a little. The irony? I had researched and chosen the “best” private school, one I thought fit our family’s values perfectly.
A LEAP THAT TOOK A YEAR
Our move to unschooling didn’t happen in a burst of rebellion; it was a slow, careful unfolding. The first time I heard about this radical idea, I was skeptical. So I did what any academic mom would do: I buried myself in research.
For almost a year, I devoured every study, measured every risk, and asked every question. The science convinced me. But my heart wanted more. I needed real families, real stories.
So I turned to blogs from abroad. And then, gold. I found a Turkish Facebook group filled with parents like us: questioning, hoping, daring to imagine a different way. Six months later, most of my doubts had melted away. Still, I knew we wouldn’t truly understand until we stepped onto the path ourselves.
A POMEGRANATE FULL OF SURPRISES
There’s an old Turkish riddle: “I bought one from the market, came home with a thousand.” The answer? A pomegranate. That’s exactly what unschooling became for us; bursting with unexpected jewels of joy, freedom, and growth.
All those fears we had before? They never even came up once we started. Esila flourished. Her laughter returned, her questions multiplied, and her days overflowed with creativity again. Even her father -once hesitant- turned into an unschooling enthusiast before the year was out. Why? Because we could all see it: our daughter was radiantly, soul-deep happy. And everyone around us noticed too.
Curious how a cautious academic mom became a joyful unschooling advocate, and what magical (and messy) adventures followed?
